HsH artist spotlight shines light on: Ahu (Dolly)

WORDS FROM THE HERO

By now, most of you already know that I have A Special Place in my Heart and Soul for Mellow, Jazzy, Soulful, Melodic, Soothing Vibes..... In Fact The Place in my Heart takes up the Majority of the Space hahaha. Whenever I hear A Certain Type of Music it puts me At Complete Peace and 200% Comfort Mode. For those of you who can't relate, No Offense but I feel sorry for you, Cus if you only knew how dope the Feeling I get when the Track I am Posting Below Plays (which will be Playing Automaticly For A few weeks, So you are probally Listening to Her right now).... (sigh)

The Angelic Soulstress you are Hearing right now is Non-other than AHU (Dolly). Whom most of you probally know her from her Beyond Classic Collaboration with Flying Lotus on the Track "Roberta Flack" which next to "Turn your Lights on" are Among my favorite Tracks of all time.

To Be honest w/ you I do not know that much about AHU, but I can promise you I have Spent Hours upon Hours at Various Times on some Super Fan Club Stalker Ish Trying to find Any Info, Pictures, Audio etc..... It's Funny to me that All these new artist, even Veteran Artist have this new philosophy of releasing 3 albums (which aren't even albums but half-ass Mixtapes) a month, and Over-Saturate the Market with A Bunch of Sub-par Music just to stay current and on peoples Radar, while Talents of the likes of AHU, or Vikter Duplaix, Median, Kay of the Foundation, Etc Release only Top Quality Music and keep you Wishing and Fiening for more music.

Since I Can't give you too much Info on The Artist I love so much, I will just provide you with As much Info, and Music as I can and hope you get as much joy and dope Memories as I do/have.

Dolly, Istanbul

Ahu started her musical odyssey singing in school bands and the Saint Antuan choir, before debuting her radio show 'Soul Tripping' on Istanbul’s FG 93.7. Nowadays you can find her spinning on Dinamo FM, as well as at events like the Electronica Festival Istanbul. Watch out for her collabo with Flying Lotus called Dolly. Ahu glides like Torvill, segueing effortlessly between artists such as Okada Taxi, Roisin Murphy, Willie Hutch and Daz-I-Kue. Quality. Diversity. Consistency.

First vinyl EP of the sequel to the orginal instrumental beats comp...Beat Dimensions! First to drop is 12-A, which contains five brand new tracks from beatmakers all over the world....

Danny Breaks and Adlib who drop a solid banger (this is not going to disappoint!), they are followed by newbies Mono/Poly (Faces, Vienna), Nosaj Thing (Poobah, LA), Kenlo Cragnuques (Quebec) and Dalt Wisney

Expect three 12”s parts, a 7” and a CD (plus digital of course).

The release date is set to May 7th so Pre-Order here, and be on the lookout for part 2 & 3.

Get both five-track EPs with additional material by the likes of Flylo collaborator Nosaj Thing (Los Angeles), Mono/Poly (Vienna), Dimlite (Bern), Musique Large’s Fulgeance, Kenlo Cragnuques (Quebec), Dalt Wisney, and Academy team vets Danny Breaks and Adlib, here.

"Possibly the best posthumous rap record since the final releases of 2Pac and Biggie.” -
Rolling Stone Magazine

New York, NY—– By now most everyone is familiar with the story of musical legend J Dilla. The quiet, prolific producer collaborated with everyone from Eryka Badu to Common to Janet Jackson to Prince. Dilla was just beginning to capitalize on his cult status when he sadly passed at age 32 due to Lupus-related complications. Jay Stay Paid is a 28 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, “J$P” also offers a few guests vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, Havoc of Mobb Deep, M.O.P. , Raekwon and more.

Curtailing any notion of jumping on some sort of Dilla bangwagon, Jay Stay Paid was executive produced by Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) along with the musical supervision of Dilla’s only real musical idol, Pete Rock. “It wasn’t rushed and it wasn’t haphazard,” explains Ms Yancey. “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing…this is like the missing links to Dilla’s legacy.”

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock as the program director. With regards to Pete’s involvement, Ms. Yancey gets very excited, “Dilla wanted to pattern himself behind Pete. His dream was to become as close as possible to what Pete stood for. Pete meant everything to him. Dilla would have just been flabbergasted! ” Pete’s sentiments were the same toward Dilla, “Dude was amazing. He just kinda came outta nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be here with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”

In the late 80s, Dilla founded the seminal rap group Slum Village and put Detroit hip-hop on the map, while the 90’s saw him playing a major role in the production team The Ummah with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing extensive work on Tribe Called Quest’s last two albums.

On June 22, Rapster/!K7 will issue Dillanthology2: Dilla’s Remixes For Various Artists, its second collection of vintage J Dilla tracks. Some fans criticized the first installment, Dillanthology for having too many familiar cuts. But with relatively obscure Dilla remixes for Masta Ace, Busta Rhymes and Mood, this one should satisfy the Internet rabble.

  • 1. De La Soul, “Stakes Is High (Remix)” (feat. Mos Def & Truth Enola)
  • 2. The Pharcyde, “Y? (Be Like That) (Jay Dee Remix)”
  • 3. Masta Ace, “Sitting On Chrome (Ummah Remix)”
  • 4. Slum Village, “Fall In Love (Remix)”
  • 5. Four Tet, “As Serious As Your Life (Jay Dee Remix)”
  • 6. Busta Rhymes, “Whoo Ha (Jay Dee Remix)”
  • 7. Artifacts, “The Ultimate (Jay Dee Remix)”
  • 8. Mood, “Secrets Of The Sand (Remix)”
  • 9. Spacek, “Eve (Jay Dee Mix)”
  • 10. DJ Cam, “Love Junkie (Jay Dee Remix)”
  • 11. Brother Jack McDuff, “Oblighetto (J Dilla Remix)”
  • 12. Brand New Heavies, “Sometimes (Remix)”

____________________________

This is the first in a series of planned albums focusing on different aspects of the illustrious producer’s career and should be seen as a tribute to his memory and spirit. In the coming months, look for separate volumes for both his remix work and production on his own projects. Dillanthology,Volume 1 will be in stores March 31, 2009.

WORDS FROM THE HERO

Reebok, Nike? Addidas, Supra, Puma? Hmmmmm, Even tho this particular spotlight is aimed @t REEBOK We (meaning Me) @t The Hobbyshop Hero would like to Make it perfectly Clear that ....... Well I'm am not A loyalist to any particular Brand and/or style of Sneaker or Clothing In general for that Matter. I mention this because of A Debate I had w/ a few cats about being Nike Heads or Strickly Shelltoes and I jumped in w/ the Fact that I Found these Dope Velcro Joints @t Wall mart for 9.99 that Looked Doper Than most Shoes... I bought them and All tho The Style Was on Point and you would Have Never Been Able to tell the Difference Between My Wall mart Kicks and The $400 Designer Kicks that have An Unknown name I must say, They were Super Uncomfortable and were Destroyed within The Month (meaning The Sole Detached from the Sneaker and the Side Panel started UnStitching) I Guess the point I am going to make with my ScatterBrained Akward Ramble Technique is that... To me It doesn't Matter the price or the Name of something, but more A matter of being Attracted to something. Which Brings me to Another thing. There are Alot of Sneakers I think are Dope! and would love to own, but wouldn't Necessarily wear. (EXAMPLE: The Reebok VOLTRON PACK and/or The NIKE TRANSFORMER PACK) - On The Cult Appeal Alone I want Everyone of those sneakers included in those Sets yet would only wear a few of them maybe once or twice.

Now, The Sneakers I posted Above (Reebok Berlins) & The Joints Below (Re-Up Lux) I would Rock and I personal Love..

If you are A Repeat Reader you might remember the Post about the OrchardStreet x Reebok Collabo back in December "Orchard Street x Reebok Re-Up Lux" Since the Very 1st Time I layed eyes on these joints I wanted A Pair. Months Later, I get to Present more info on these Gems.

Orchard Street x Reebok Pump Omni Hexride x Reebok Re-Up Lux

Orchard Street x Reebok collection, consisting of t-shirts, windbreakers, hoodies, and the two Pictured sneakers - the Pump Omni Hex Ride and the Re-Up Lux (My personal Fav of the Two) The sneaker comes with the lacing on the side, a grid pattern on the black upper and Text Colorpurple/turquoise outer soles

WORDS FROM THE HERO

One of my favorite pass times is browsing the talented humans on DeviantART, It's A little frustrating tho because there is an overwhelming amount of Beyond Amazing Artists on there. I Literally could Fill the website with great photo's 24 hours a Day, 7 Days a Week and not run out of Inspiration. While sitting on my porch after watching S. Darko (The Sequel to Donnie Darko) I came Across A Picture that Reminded me Of the Color Palette of THE HOBBYSHOP HERO.

Enter Genaro Desia, an illustrator also known as Surround. Now I love all types of styles of art from Dirty SteamPunk-eske Landscapes with Dull and dreary Futuristic settings to the most colorful and Childish looking Art Imaginable. Something that Rings in my head more than anything else is this moment while at the movies with the Person who knows me and my soul more than anyone and she looked over at me watching this movie on the edge of my seat, tapping my feet, huge smile, wide eyes, music conductor hand gestures to every suttle sound and she said "I Love that you are so Easily and Sincerely Excited and Inspired by almost everything" well, kids truer words have never been spoken and it is because I focus on the Dopeness in life. and Life is Sooooooooooooo Dope, and you know what?!?!?! So are Genaro "Surround" Desia's Photo's so ENJOY! the select Images I have chose and visit his portfolio for the rest of them!!!!!!

[HALF BAKED SNAKE] Rohby's Solid Snake vinyl toy (Metal Gear Solid) + Pocket SoundWAVE Vinyl toy (Liv3r edition)

Rohby’s Custom Ack-tion Fig – Half Baked Snake

Custom Toy Designer (if that is what the Correct Title is) Rohby just made alot of noise in the Vinyl Toy / Action Figure / Custom Art Community w/ his Re-interpitation of One of the Dopest Characters known to Hobbyshop-Cult Classic-Nintendo Generation History,
Solid Snake!

Now, I dont know if this was A good or bad Move but the Highly Hyped Custom Solid Snake dubbed "Half Baked Snake" is an Extremely Rare Find as only 10 of these custom pieces were created. EVERY SINGLE ONE was SOLD within 48 hours for $120 A pop. I've read posts where kids are offering up to $1500 for one of these. Like I said, Not sure if that was a Good or Bad move. He Cut his profits off @t $1200 instead of feeding the high demand that has been built up for this Classic Custom, unless he doesnt have to worry too much about the Monatary side of things then it would make sense to release A Limited Run. One thing is for sure tho the next custom Rohby will be working on (the Russian soldiers from MGS Sons of Liberty) will be watched under A microscope until the release day and sell out all over again. I've read different things from different sources but from I can gather, there are 3 more figures from the Metal Gear Series planned to be put into motion. For now all we have are these Amazing pictures to look at hahahahaha.
