A Pipe Dream and a Promise
DROPS April 7th, 2009 on Interdependent Media.

http://www.audibletreats.com/Media/newspics/Finale00.jpg

A Pipe Dream and A Promise pulses with the evolving Detroit hip-hop sound; a multi-layered blend of hard-hitting beats, abstract electronic instrumentals, and illustrative lyrics that tell the personal story of a man’s journey in a city on the cusp of a simultaneous economic breakdown and musical resurgence. Featuring production from J Dilla, Black Milk, Flying Lotus, Notzz, and Oddisee, the album showcases the work of a variety of exceptionally talented producers, with each offering a different musical foundation for Finale to showcase his lyrical onslaught.

Speaking about the title of the album, Finale says, “That’s my definition of hip-hop. There are two sides to hip-hop or any dream that you follow. It starts as a dream that everyone says is a pipe dream. They deter you from your dreams. But as artists we promise ourselves we are going to follow our dreams.”

Before making his entrance into hip-hop, Finale worked as an automotive engineer promising to one day follow his dream of becoming a rapper. Making the rounds at local Detroit open mics and emcee battles, Finale began to mingle with local talents like Guilty Simpson and One.Be.Lo. After emailing some joints back and forth with J Dilla, Finale finally met him backstage at the DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival), where Dilla introduced him to Madlib, saying that he was one of the best in the game. “It was an honor and definitely a defining moment,” says Finale. After realizing his passion and talent for hip-hop, Finale decided to finally quit his day job, follow his true passion, and make music a full-time career.

Korg Nano Series now available in BLACK! The Super Tiny MIDI: (Keyboard, Controller, Pads) Megapost

KORG nano series in Black

KORG nano

NOW AVAILABLE in BLACK!!!!!!

WORDSfromtheHERO

"Korg announced a new black color option for their nanoSeries products"

Oh Word? Really? Did They? ooooooooooh K, now that we have that bit of info out in the open I guess we should touch based on what brought us to that glorious Announcment. It began summer 2008. I was camped out in my usual spot in the Borders (coffeeshop Area) right next to the magazines with my stack of Music, Art, Design, Audio and Tech Magazines. Each trip (once A month) usually lasts 4-6 hours and consists of 30-60 Magazines.

I would thumb thru each one and take notes on who the editor was, who reviewed the music that was similar to that of the music I create. I would jot down interesting website links, design companies, Artists, etc, when all of a sudden there they were! Small Audio Attachments that made my eyes grow wide and my heart sing. Only a few pages into the magazine (COMPUTER MUSIC) which is my favorite magazine.

I came across The KORG NANO SERIES.

A few months Prior I just purchased A MacBook for touring so when I saw, 3 Essential things needed (A Midi Keyboard, an Mpc Style Pad & A Midi Controler, all the exact size and color of my Macbook I was in heaven. I then spent the next few months playing the waiting game. Searching for reviews and user comments to see if they were all I hoped they were.

Fastfoward to Feb 2009, I have gathered and come to this personal conclustion.

1. I have Horrible Grammar / Spelling hahaha 2. The KorgNanoSeries are indeed worth purchasing for a few reasons. They are super portable & durable and they are very inexspensive.

The downside which is noted in some of the videos I have posted below is the NanoKey has a slight flaw in the design which makes it akward for experience keyboard players. All of the Keys are the same size instead of the black keys having a slimmer design. Another issue is the far right key is directly next to the Menu, Edit, Command Keys, so it is too easy to accidently hit the wrong button during A live performance. The Issue I have personally is I am trying to learn to the keyboard right now or at least I would like to, So the Nanokey wouldnt be the best choice for me at this time.

(SIDENOTE/REQUEST)

Because I am trying to learn the keyboard I am not sure which Midi controller to go with, I was going to get the Oxygen 8 but I was told by a few people to get the Axiom 25, What I am wondering is should I purchase A keyboard with 88, or 4o something keys or will I be able to learn just fine with 25 keys?..... If anyone can recommend or share any info suggestions, please leave a comment.

In Closing, I wanted to showcase this product for you guys a while back but waited until I knew more info. I hope this helps =)

HsH

There are three different controllers in the line:

* nanoKEY: 25 keys, transmitting either as MIDI notes or (via a separate mode) Control Change (CC) messages. Octave shift (natch). Pitch, modulation. And it’s supposed to be velocity-sensitive, too, although we’ll have to get our hands on one to see how sensitive it is.

* nanoPAD: 12 pads, supposedly inheriting the terrific sensitivity and feel of the padKONTROL, which is pretty much the favorite pad controller round these parts. Chord Trigger. Control Change mode (as with nanoKEY). There’s even an X/Y touch pad with roll and flam mode, favorite features of the padKONTROL.

* nanoKONTROL: 9 faders, 9 knobs, 18 switches, transport controls. (No, really.) MIDI notes, 168 CC messages. There are even attack and decay times for the switches, allowing them to work as faders, filter controls, effects settings, and the like – something I’d love to see on other (full-sized) controllers.

Software + Extras

The Nanokey Includes A Download Code For The Full Version Of Korg’s M1Le Software. An Upgrade Path To The Korg Legacy Digital Edition Software Suite Is Also Available, Containing An Expanded Version Of The M1 As Well As The Wavestation And 19 Mdex Effects.

The Nanopad Comes With A Download Code For Toontrack’s Ezdrummer Lite. An Upgrade To The Full Version Is Also Available.

null

* All Three Models Include A Discount Coupon For Ableton Live Le Recording Software. “Korg Kontrol Editor” Software, Downloadable Free Of Charge From The Korg Website, Provides Nanoseries Users With Even Greater Control.

* Both Color Options For The Nanokey, Nanopad And Nanokontrol Are Now Available With A U.S. Msrp Of $62.00 For Nanokey And $72.00 For Nanopad And Nanokontrol.

For more information, visit their web site at www.korg.com.

Now, For A more detailed breakdown of Each component w/ Picture Examples (Yah!) - HsH

Korg Nano Series
(MIDI Controller)

The Nano Key, as its name suggests, is a keyboard-based device with 25 velocity-sensitive keys, which feel like the type used in laptop keyboards. In ‘CC mode’, these keys can be used to send controller information, so you can alter any MIDI parameter. An Octave Shift button enables the Nano Key to address all the MIDI notes of a full-size keyboard, while Pitch and Modulation functions enable the user to apply pitch bend and modulation, as is possible with most standard MIDI controller keyboards.

The Nano Pad has 12 velocity-sensitive pads and a neat X-Y track pad, making it ideal for drum programming. But the pads aren’t just for triggering samples; they can be used to transmit control change messages, so you can mute and solo tracks in DAW software, for example, by punching the pads. To further add to the Nano Pad’s functionality, it’s got a Chord Trigger function that lets the user assign a chord to a single pad, and freely downloadable software enables the user to create ‘scenes’, essentially enabling 48 chords or pads, and 60 MIDI controllers to be accessed at the touch of a button. The X-Y track pad has been set up with Roll and Flam modes, which compliment the drum pads and make realistic drum programming a breeze, but it can also be used to transmit conventional MIDI CCs.

The final new product in the Nano range is the Nano Kontrol, which has nine knobs, nine faders and 18 buttons, all of which are freely assignable. There’s also a full transport section, which can be set to transmit standard MIDI CC data or MIDI Machine Control (MMC) messages. As with the other Nano controllers, multiple sets of parameters can be created.

All three Nano devices are bus-powered via the mini USB connection, which is on the side of the units. The Nano Key will cost just £49, with the Nano Pad and the Nano Kontrol both costing £59,

This is the original or 1st video I came across last year from the "London International Music Show", when I 1st became aware of the KORG Nano Series, It didnt really sell me fully which is why I still do not own them yet, but I wanted to include it in the post anyway. - HsH

I Also wanted to Include A few videos of the Hardware in action for you guys so Enjoy the short demonstrations - HsH

I recieved an Email today from SuperProducer "DERT". It was A Video he took while Attending the "Suite For Ma Dukes" Concert on February 22nd, live at the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex, in L.A. The Email said to post in on the Blog so here I am, and watching it via you tube doesn't hold a candle to being in the concert hall live listening to A 36-piece orchestra perform the Suite For Ma Dukes EP.

Big ups to Dert for sending this out to everyone, I hope to see more footage surface. If any does, I will update and add to this post. Id be really surprised if they don't end up releasing an Official DVD of the EVENT. I would love to own that priceless gem, but more than A Dvd I wish I could have been in L.A. for the event.

The Story Behind: “Donuts” Cover

WORDS From The HERO

There are some Subjects that are difficult to touch on, and there are some Articles, posts, that are done in such a way you don't want to even attempt to summarize. This is one of those subjects and this is one of those posts. While researching during my breaks from chopping up samples i've collected, I came across an Amazing post @ Sofakingdiligent.com. Tho the post didn't originate from there. it was actually done by Theodore for his website/blog The Cover Up.

The Month past few weeks have been filled w/ great J Dilla posts and special mixes, artwork and tribute shows. James (Jay Dee) Yancey without A doubt has made the greatest impact on our generation of musicians and fans and even in his absence his presence vibrates speakers in every Zip code on every continent as each minute passes. I am ashamed to admit this, but it wasn't until recently I was able to fully appreciate and recognize the Genius and Skill of DONUTS. When I first sat down and listened to it I of coarse loved it and still do, but I never could understand the hype around it and certain comments people like Qwestlove and people would make.

I guess what it all boiled down to was the fact I had not heard the original tracks he sampled from until just recently when I came into A Zip of EVERY SINGLE SONG Dilla EVER SAMPLED. I guess because DONUTS wasnt A Typical Boombap, 16 Measure Hiphop Album I couldnt Accept it as his last great project. To hear the original songs he sampled for "Working on it" - "two can Win" - etc was like Opening presents on Xmass morning. I felt so much joy and I Finally was able to understand what I was until then missing.

Since the Late Great has moved on to A better place, Alot of producers have stepped out of the shadows with just as much if not more and more advanced beats. I am able to admit that and I am fully aware that even saying that would make certain people wanna punch me in the neck and smack me with A Milkcrate, but the truth is while time, Advancements will happen and those Advancement have been popping up in record numbers. The thing I am most saddened by is the fact we will never get to hear the progression of James Yancey Beyond the point we already have. Which is Unfair, but unfortunately reality. The Great thing is we can hear his influence in almost every amazing Producer since him and his legacy will forever live on.

Now, on to the HEADLINING ACT =)

The Story Behind: “Donuts” Cover

February's been officially declared "Dilla Month"; a time to celebrate one of the most influential producers in hip-hop and 'neo-soul', James Yancey, who sadly died on February 10th, 2006, three days after his birthday. I thought this would be a good time to take a look at his album released at that time, Donuts.

Donuts was an important album for me. Although I wouldn't fully understand who Dilla was until the release of Champion Sound, I always looked for music with the "Soulquarian" and "Ummah" names attached. I played Common's Like Water For Chocolate and Badu's Mama's Gun endlessly. I remember picking up Slum Village's Fantastic Vol. 2 and loving it. But I still didn't know exactly who this Jay Dee guy was, back before I had music blogs to dig through and my only resource was Allmusic.com.

I was excited to get my copy of Donuts in the mail, finally getting a proper portrait of the man behind this music I had been connecting with for years. While listening to the album for the first time I jumped online only to find out that he had passed away that day. It was a surreal experience that made Donuts more than just a beat tape. Since then it has become one of those pivotal albums that changed my views on music and influenced my own art.

I had a few questions about the packaging for the album, so I went straight to the source, exchanging some emails with Jeff Jank, art director of Stones Throw Records. He shared some great insight with me along with the images to go along with this post. Here's a summary of what he told me.

Donuts is the album Jeff Jank has been most involved with on the label, through inception, editing and mastering, as well as the work he is proudest of. The process started as he and others would visit Dilla in the medical center. At one point he brought the handmade work he had done for Madlib's The Furhter Adventures of Lord Quas. Dilla was currently working on his album, The Shining, and asked Jeff if he could create some similar "bugged out" art for it.

Jeff had planned to do a panoramic illustration that followed the insert of The Further Adventures (shown above), along with Dilla's idea of taking photos in the strange medical masks they had him wear at the center. Donuts (title inspired by Dilla's obsession with junk food) came along and focus switched. At one point Jeff threw in the idea of placing the CD inside of a doughnut, having people eat their way to the music.

Soon after Dilla was out of the hospital, feeling better. He flew to Brazil with Madlib, Eric Coleman and Brian Cross from Mochilla, with plans to shoot some photos for the album. Unfortunately, he became too ill and had to fly back to Los Angeles. Stones Throw began to question the cartoon images they had planned for the cover and decided a photo was needed. This ended up being the image pulled from M.E.D's "Push" (produced by Dilla) video, directed by Andrew Gura (below). The resolution of the image was too low to use for the vinyl release, which is why it features an alternative cover.

While the album was in production, Dilla was on tour in Europe and his health was wavering. Soon after the tour was finished, Jeff had visited Dilla in December '05, during the time he was living with Common. He was excited for the release of Donuts and was playing tracks from The Shining. This would be one of the last times Jeff would see him.

Jeff Jank was never completely satisfied with using a low-res image for the cover, but it still lead to a few imitators. He mentioned that there were several, mostly tributes. I only know of a few. Not that it was an imitation, but Jeff also noted the similarities between Donuts and the cover of Common's album Be, as it also used a low-resolution image of Common smiling which had to be cleaned up in Photoshop.

I personally feel the album, art and music, was an appropriate way to say goodbye to a great artist. Dilla's posthumous releases The Shining, the re-issue of Ruff Draft and Jay Love Japan are all amazing albums, but Donuts is special. The cover has become an iconic image of Dilla in my mind and I'm sure for other people. I also can't look at a pink iced doughnut without hearing his music in my head.

Thanks to Jeff Jank for the help. Thank you Jay Dee for the music!

Kid Cudi - Day ‘N’ Night (Offical VIDEO) by So_me (ED BANGER) + CROOKERS MIX 2 D/L

The Hype surrounding Kid Cudi is super crazy and specifically based on This one track "Day N Night" which Personally I think is really dope. The Crookers Remix is even more Amazing song that really helped propel this kids career into the heavens. It didnt Hurt that Kanye West picked the cat up either. I have heard a few different albums/mixtapes from Cudi and there hasnt been A single song other than Day N Night I thought was great. Tho he does get amazing reviews across the blogs, any person I have spoken with has said the same thing as me. A few months ago the Video for the Crookers Version was released but I guess Cudi wasnt happy with the Creative Direction and demanded the Video not be released, Well obviously his wishes were disregarded cus the video was on Blogs all over the Net. Cudi issue a statement saying he isnt Co-signing the video and asked for people not to post it up or watch it and those who do will never be in his "good graces" haha. Now heres the thing, I often do a little research when posting on THEHOBBYSHOPHERO, So because of that reason, I ended up reading his Blog where he said for people not to post it. (At the time, I respected his wishes. As an Artist I know how it feels for something you dont want released find its way out in the public) but what about the people who didnt read his "wishes". What about the Kid that saw the video on some site, and loved it so he posted it on his blog because he is a big supporter of Kid Cudi, So what, now Cudi is gonna go on Strike and not do a Interview for the kids site?.... Do you understand what I am getting out? So yea, Months later the OFFICAL "DAY N NIGHT" Video is released , which is produced by none other than creative director of Edbanger Records, and artist extraordinaire So_Me.

p1010601.JPG

So_me is an Amazing Artist with some pretty colorful concepts. He was also behind one of my favorite Videos and Feel good tracks of the last few years, Kanye's "Good Life" Video

So Word, Its A pretty close knit circle we have here. Cudi, Kanye, So_me, Ed Banger, Crookers, A-Trak etc... I went ahead and posted the "UNofficial" Crookers Video Version + some Extras for you lovely Readers. Aiight well, Im Ghost - Gotta Finish up my Remix of Colin Munroe's "Piano Lessons" =)

Peace.

Obey x J Dilla Print

obey-jdilla-front Obey x J Dilla Print

WORDSFROMTHEHERO

Obey has printed up very Limited run of J Dilla "Poster/Prints" to keep the memory of this universally loved and cherished producer alive as well as help w/ the relief of his mother “Ma Dukes” whom was challenged not only by her sons vast medical bills but now her own. 50 prints will be released at a charity event on February 22nd in Los Angeles. The prints will go for 55 USD. From what I have read only 400 are availible (PERIOD) I am hoping that w/ time they will be Re-pressed and not as bootleg prints but as another Official Run to help out Ma Dukes.

http://obeygiant.com/prints/obey-x-dilla

It makes me think of all the people who have no ties to anyone of fame or do not have any sort of media outlet and suffer w/ no relief at all. So many people find out they have something wrong with them every minute, but what scares me is the people who have no idea what is laying idle in they're body. Personally I haven't been to the Doctors to have my self checked out/over since I was in my teens. Not the smartest move on my part but unfortunately Being A Recording Artist doesnt come with Health Benefits.

If you are in a situation that you can have yourself checked out, I would highly recommend doing so, cus you never know.

I wish all my readers nothing but the best of days and the healthiest of lives.

Dilla:A Personal Appreciation

The photo used in the making of this poster was made in 2003 in Detroit at Dilla’s home/studio. I had been commissioned by Stonesthrow to photograph him for the Jaylib record. Coleman and myself were chuffed to tell him about how much love there was for him in the city of Angels. We had met Dilla several times before and he always had the same humble slightly withdrawn demeanor. He wasn’t entirely happy to have his photograph taken but it was understandable as the illness was beginning to wreak havoc on his body. Dilla meant so much to anyone who watched hiphop slowly decline as the 90s wore on. He stood for soul and jazz and musicianship in the music. His beats saved many lives, inspired many and he carried a heavy weight into the early millennium. He continued to elevate the music when many fell to the demands of a mainstream only interested in excess, hyper-commodification and violence.
In 2005 Coleman, Madlib, Dilla and myself went to Brasil. It was a remarkable journey considering how sick Dilla was. He needed to go there we thought, he was the first to sample Brasilian music.
All through his illness Dilla leaned heavily on his mother Maureen Yancey (fondly known to him as Ma Dukes). She was his 24hour nurse, she patiently sat as he programmed beats. She even pushed his wheelchair on a European tour at the end of 05. Her complete commitment to him was inspiring. She too suffers from Lupus, the illness that took him. Early in 09 we received word that Ma Dukes illness had gotten worse. She was struggling away in Detroit and had hit some financial difficulties. I reached out to Shep through Ernesto to see if he would be interested in doing something for her. As always Shepherd got on it with the quickness. The proceeds from this sale will go to her. What you see here is a unique and great collaboration for someone who has brought much joy and love into many lives. Long live Dilla. Ma Dukes we love you.

-Brian Cross (B+)

DILLA
James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006), better known as J Dilla or Jay Dee, was one of the primary forces behind the revered underground hip-hop movement that emerged in the mid-1990s and continues to have far-reaching impact today. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Dilla was often called “your favorite producer’s favorite producer.” Though he maintained a virtually anonymous profile, his reputation followed him through both the subterranean circles of hip-hop, as well as the mainstream. Producing some of modern hip-hop’s crowning anthems–including Common’s “The Light,” De La Soul’s “Stakes is High,” and the Pharcyde’s “Runnin’”—he also worked with R&B luminaries Janet Jackson and Macy Gray. With his premature death at the age of thirty-two, his musical legacy has garnered him prominence as one of hip-hop’s most gifted scions.
More than a beat-maker, Dilla was a “composer” in the modern-day sense of the term’s progression. From his beginnings with production team the Ummah (with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest) to his step into the foreground as an emcee with Slum Village, Dilla perfected a style characterized by his steady wobble, which remains unfailingly artful and rich in detail.
Entering the millennium as a core member of the vanguard musical collective Soulquarians with James Poyser and the Roots’ Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, Dilla co-created some of the decade’s most significant hip-hop and soul releases: Common’s Like Water for Chocolate, D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun and Talib Kweli’s Quality. Meanwhile, a serendipitous collaboration arose between Dilla and prolific L.A. producer/emcee Madlib in the early 2000s. Between L.A. and Detroit, the duo released Champion Sound as “Jaylib” in 2003. Dilla subsequently moved to L.A.
Around this time, Dilla was diagnosed with lupus. Despite his failing health and having to perform in a wheelchair, he was still able to tour in Europe during late 2005. With his musical spirit still intact, Dilla managed to complete his last album Donuts, while he was hospitalized. It was commercially released on his thirty-second birthday—he passed away three days later from cardiac arrest.

B+ (aka Brian Cross)
B+ was born and raised in Limerick, Ireland. He graduated the National College of Art and Design in 1989 with a degree in painting. He came to the US in 1990 and received an MFA in photography at CalArts. WORDS from the HERO

This is really off the grid of the type of Content I generally post but I wanted people to have a Chance to be aware of some information they may or may not have had the chance to. Now, This topic has got the Internet Going Nuts (shout to NALDISNEY) and I can understand why but im not really bother by this too much. I guess I understand the concept of once A photo or whatnot leaves my computer and goes to a 2nd person / Application it isnt private or subject to being un Altered. Im not going to much into this topic at all, Instead here are a few links if you want to dive further and/or deeper into the subject.

P.s. I've never really liked Facebook or the experience using it so far anyways. hahah

Why are we doing this?

Everyone of us involved in this small project loves music and supports it in his very own way. Whether it's by producing, dj'ing, talking, designing, writing, bloggin' or something else. Both Full Crate & FS Green are producers who love to play music. Since there is so much music out there they like to select their favorites for you and yours on a monthly base and blend them in a lovely mix which is free to download because good music needs to be heard.

Deluge and Brian Elstak will be responsible for the artwork so you can print out this stuff and burn it baby. Your host of this Mixing Monthly project is Naldisney cause he still got the internet goin' nutz.

Keep discovering music.

Peace to the cats over @t 2dopeboyz for this one. Last year, or maybe the one before im not quite sure anymore hahaha. I was at my homeboy CHEF's studio just vibing out and such, when he told me that my EX Specifically told him to make me download this mixtape from this cat DRAKE. Well, I did so and I was pretty damn impressed. He had the appeal of A Commercial Act and the Talent of....well a Dope Emcee with a good taste in beats. I found out this kid was A an actor from Toronto who is on the Show DEGRASSI HIGH, I remember as A Git watching Degrassi Jr High so I was Intrigued, and I never dismiss someone based on what they do for A Day job.
