The HsH Artist Spotlight: Starring DAN MUMFORD (freelance illustrator, Designer)

______________________________________

ARTIST: DAN MUMFORD INTERVIEW w/ iamthetrend.com

Dan Mumford

Name/Age: Dan Mumford/25

Website: www.dan-mumford.com

Myspace: www.myspace.com/takeittotheboneyard

Background/Education: I went to Brighton University to study Illustration, before that nothing really of note..the usual schooling. Brighton was were i developed into what i do now.

Why/How Did you get into design?: I have just always had a bit of a talent for drawing when i was younger, and i’m not really the academic type, so i enjoyed Art and music a lot more, so it was only natural to move on to design/illustration when it came to the end of my A-Levels. I didnt really know in what aspect of art i wanted to work, but it flowed easily from there.

Favorite Project(s) that you have done: I would have to say working with ‘The Black Dahlia Murder’ is always pretty fulfilling, its a bit of an ongoing project with, i am just working on my 4th batch of tee designs for them now over the last two years, and just scheduling in a 5th for later this year, and each time its like a new stage in my work, i always try and push it a bit more as they kind of just let me do what i want to do now as they know what to , its a real nice position to be in and they are great to work with. Apart from that the Evil 9 project was fun, we just saw that finally completed with the third of three vinyls printed up last month, the covers make a zombie landscape!

Influences/Inspirations: I am influenced heavily by all aspects of sci-fi and horror, comics, movies, a lot of the 80’s film output is just the pinnacle of what i enjoy, the terminator, the thing, the fly! When special effects were really coming to life.

How would you describe your Style: Overtly complex for no good reason! I would just say complex, my work has sort of evolved to a point where pieces take a good few days, due to the complete spaghetti like mess of linework that i come up with. That and colourful. Complex and Colourful.

Is this your full-time gig? yeah! this is my life right now, essentially all my time is taken doing this to pay my way, which is great. I would like to have time to go back to playing a bit of music on the side when i can. But as far as jobs go, this is it.

One Piece of Advice: Dont idolize any artist, dont become obsessed with trying to draw like them, it will only end in heartache when people tell you that you are ripping on their style. Be yourself, close yourself off from art of a similar vein that you are working in, go and read some books for inspiration instead, watch a film!

Favorite Medium: The mighty Pen!

Favorite Website: iwatchstuff.com, kotaku.com and failblog.org…i cant choose, they are ALL essential.

Favorite Band at the Moment: I just got the new ISIS, and Animals As Leaders CD’s, they are both pretty good, so right now, those guys.

Favorite Clothing Line: I always like what Rockett does, always nice and fun.

Mark Ward is a graphic artist based in London. His work tries to supply a sense of reality and humour in a world full of Z list celebrities and hype. Like a glace cherry gone rotten, Mark’s work references the everyday mundane and injects it into the ever out-of-reach fantasy world of the glossy media. Influences range from skateboard graphics, punk flyer's and Americana to packaging, signage and the other wonderful sights of South London. Since graduating from Central St. Martins, Mark’s work has been used internationally across a variety of media, including T-shirts, magazine covers and editorial, commercial installations and store windows. Mark uses a variety of media to create his work, and varies his tone towards the subject matter. Preferring to use a mix of spray paint, acrylic and his paint splattered Mac, Mark creates work with fresh concepts and execution.
